Common questions about aged care costs
How much does aged care cost in Australia?+
Under Support at Home, clinical care (nursing, physio, OT) is 100% government funded. You contribute to independence and everyday-living services based on a means test — typically between 5% and 80% of the service cost depending on your income and assets. From 1 October 2026, personal care will also be fully government funded.
How much is a Level 2 aged care package?+
The old Level 2 Home Care Package (about $18,000/year) has been replaced by Support at Home classification levels. A comparable classification now provides roughly $17,000–$20,000 per year in funding. Use the calculator above to estimate how many hours of care that gives you at Happy Home Care rates.
Is My Aged Care means tested?+
Yes. Services Australia assesses your income and assets to work out your contribution to independence and everyday-living services. Full pensioners generally pay the minimum, self-funded retirees pay more. Clinical care is not means tested — it is free for everyone.
What is the maximum means-tested fee for aged care?+
For in-home care under Support at Home, contributions are capped: annually and over your lifetime. The lifetime cap across home care and residential care is around $82,000 (indexed). You will never pay more than this in means-tested contributions across your whole care journey.
What is RAD in aged care?+
RAD stands for Refundable Accommodation Deposit — it is a lump-sum payment for a room in residential aged care. RAD does not apply to Support at Home or in-home care. If you receive care at home with Happy Home Care, there is no RAD.
